Pray or Fall

Writer's picture: Gary RupertGary Rupert

"Keep watching, and be praying that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak”. Matthew 26:41

The context of this verse is that Jesus Christ is in the Garden of Gethsemane with His twelve disciples. Jesus has gone there to pray in preparation for the crucifixion. Remember what happened? Jesus asked them to be watchful and pray. What did they do? They fell asleep. Verse 40

Prior to this, the Apostle Peter made his infamous declaration; "...“Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you..." Matthew 26:35 I am sure he was sincere when he said this. But why did he fail? He failed to pray.

Prayer is THE key to shoring up our own weaknesses. I have been a minister for over 40 years and when I have asked people why they experienced a spiritual failure in their life, the vast majority have said they failed in their prayer life. Satan's biggest attack is to keep you from praying. When a believing person prays, great things happen. James 5:16

Peter's weakness caused him to fail temporarily because he hadn't prepared through prayer and he underestimated his own weakness.
