Ever Faced a Lion?

Writer's picture: Gary RupertGary Rupert

Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. 1 Peter 5:8

I have always had a fascination with the big cats (Lions, tigers, jaguars, etc.) of the animal kingdom. Lions are an Apex predator, that's why they are called the 'king of the jungle." One of their methods of stalking their prey is for the male lion to give a blood-curdling roar endeavoring to stampede the herd into an ambush where the females of the pride are waiting.

Peter was writing this letter to warn us not to make the mistake he made. He's telling us not to back away from the devil. Satan has no real power to destroy us. He knows you are no longer his prey. He can distract, discourage and frighten you so badly you just keep backing away, forgetting about all the weapons you have to resist him.

The very first weapon Satan used against mankind was fear. Genesis 3. He suggested that God was withholding something from her, creating fear. People today face all kinds of fear: financial, fear of sickness, losing your job, child may get into drugs, possible divorce, and many more.

The Bible tells us 365 times to "fear not." Sounds like we have a universal temptation! Solution? James 4:7 Resist the devil and he will flee from you." Satan has no power over you if you resist him in the power of the Holy Spirit.
